The Sunshine Zone
The Sunshine Zone was created to make data about public functions more accessible and understandable. Using innovative analytics tools from the R Project for Statistical Computing, this blog explores publicly available datasets to uncover insights, highlight systemic issues, and shed light on matters of public interest.
My background
I’m a policy and data analyst with a Master’s in Applied Econometrics from Monash University and a Bachelor of Arts and Laws (Honours) from the University of Melbourne.
I have more than twenty years of experience working across the university, nonprofit, and government sectors, specialising in policy advocacy and data analytics.
Earlier in my career, I worked as a Strategic Analyst in the Vice-Chancellor’s Department at Monash University, delivering a range of data analytics-based evaluation projects to support future investment decisions.
Following that, I served as a Strategic Intelligence Analyst at the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC), where I applied data analytics methods to extract insights from sensitive misconduct complaints and Victoria Police data. I also project-managed the development of IBAC’s Public Allegations Dashboard.
In recent years, I’ve focused on health analytics. I was the lead author of the Realising Access report, which highlighted enablers and gaps in abortion access in Victoria, using data from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, Medicare Benefits Schedule, and over 30,000 abortion seeker referral calls.
I am currently the Lead Data Analyst at GenWest. Outside of work, I occasionally write for The Conversation, Michael West Media, and Independent Australia, and, of course, maintain this data journalism blog.
